Questions
Are lithium batteries worth it?
In cold weather and for long deployments, usually yes. Energizer rates its lithium AAs for -40°C to 60°C against -18°C to 55°C for its alkalines, and Bushnell recommends lithium.

Can I use rechargeable AAs?
Check your manual. NiMH cells are 1.2 V, not 1.5 V, and some makers (such as Bushnell) don't recommend them.

Why do I get lots of empty pictures?
Why did it miss an animal walking straight at it?
PIR works best when animals cross the detection zones side to side.

No glow or low glow?
Low glow gives more range and clearer night images. No glow is invisible to people, which suits security, but it costs range and sharpness.

Why are night pictures black and white?
Infrared lighting can only give monochrome images. Colour at night needs white flash.

Does a 48 MP camera take sharper pictures than a 20 MP one?
Not necessarily. Many figures are interpolated from a much smaller sensor.

What SD card should I buy?
The type and maximum size your manual lists (some cameras only take up to 32 GB SDHC), Class 10/U1 or faster, U3/V30 for 4K. Format it in the camera.

Will a 4G camera work at my site?
Check Ofcom's Map Your Mobile for your postcode, then confirm with the camera's own signal meter on site.

Do I need a separate plan for each 4G camera?
Normally yes. Each camera needs its own active plan.

Will an old 3G trail camera still work?
No. UK 3G networks have been switched off.

Is it legal to point a trail camera at my neighbour's garden?
It isn't automatically illegal, but once your camera captures anything beyond your boundary, UK data protection law applies: you need a clear reason, signs, minimal coverage, secure storage, regular deletion and to handle requests from people filmed. Angling the camera to stay within your garden avoids all of this.

Do I need a licence to film hedgehogs in my garden?
No. Hedgehogs aren't a licensed species for filming, and Natural England says you don't need a licence to film wildlife you don't disturb.
Can I put a trail camera near a badger sett?
Disturbing a badger occupying a sett is an offence. Natural England says remote cameras are fine if set while animals are away from their resting places and they don't change behaviour; anything that interferes with an occupied sett needs a licence. Keep cameras back, set them in daylight, and talk to your local badger group.
Can I add a camera to a nest box that birds are already using?
RSPB advice is to fit cameras before the breeding season and leave boxes alone in spring. Opening an occupied box risks disturbance, and for Schedule 1 species disturbance at the nest is an offence without a licence.

Should I turn off audio recording?
Usually yes. Audio is treated as especially intrusive, and a 2021 County Court case found a neighbour's audio-capturing cameras breached data protection law.

Can I post clips of people caught on my camera online?
GOV.UK guidance says it will not be appropriate to share recordings on social media; use footage only for the purpose you installed the camera for, and give it to the police if it shows a crime.

What should I feed hedgehogs to get them on camera?
Meaty wet cat or dog food, hedgehog food or cat biscuits with a shallow dish of water. Never milk or bread.

How big should a hedgehog gap in my fence be?
13cm x 13cm.
Can I set up a trail camera on land I don't own?
Get the landowner's permission first. Badger Trust doesn't recommend setting cameras without it, and cameras in public places may also film passers-by, which brings in data protection law.
Does the Surveillance Camera Code apply to me?
Not formally. It applies to relevant authorities such as police and councils in England and Wales; householders are encouraged to follow its principles voluntarily.

Should I still feed birds seed in summer?
The RSPB's July 2026 guidance says pause seed and peanuts from 1 May to 31 October to reduce disease risk; small amounts of mealworms, fat balls or suet are fine.
